I've been there myself, so I get how nerve-wracking the first time flying alone can be. Especially when navigating the airport and boarding the plane all by yourself. Although it may seem intimidating with some preparation, it can also be an exhilarating adventure. That’s why I've put together a list of my top tips for flying alone for the first time and helping to feel more self-assured and prepared.

Prior to even reaching the airport, it’s important to plan in advance. Ensure that you have all your essential travel documents, such as a valid passport or ID, and check the expiry date to avoid any complications. If you're traveling internationally, research any visa requirements and ensure to acquire them beforehand. Moreover, consider scheduling your flight during off-peak hours to evade crowds and long queues. By doing these beforehand, you'll be able to concentrate on enjoying your first solo flight.

Understanding the Basics

Choosing Your Flight

When embarking on your first time flying alone, it's crucial to choose a flight that suits your needs. Take the following factors into consideration when making your selection:

  • Time of day: Opt for a flight that departs and arrives at a convenient time for you. If you're an early riser, consider booking a morning flight. If you prefer traveling at night, look for flights departing later in the day.

  • Direct vs. connecting flights: Direct flights are more convenient but often pricier. If you're on a budget, consider booking a connecting flight.

  • Airline: Different airlines have varying policies and amenities. Research and find an airline that aligns with your requirements and budget.

Booking Your Ticket

Once you've chosen your flight, it's time to book your ticket. Here are a few tips to keep in mind for your first time flying alone:

  • Book early: The earlier you book your ticket, the more likely you are to get a good deal.

  • Choose your seat: Choose your seat: When booking, select a seat that offers comfort. If you're tall, an aisle seat might provide more legroom.

  • Check-in online: Most airlines allow you to check-in online up to 24 hours before your flight. This can save you time and hassle at the airport.

  • Pack light: Traveling alone necessitates packing light. This will facilitate easier navigation through the airport and managing your luggage.

By following these tips, you can ensure a successful first solo flight. Stay calm, embrace the experience, and savor the journey!

Pre-Flight Preparations

Flying alone for the first time may stir up nerves, but with proper preparation, you can ensure a stress-free journey. Allow me to share some pre-flight preparations that proved helpful during my own solo travels.

Packing Essentials

Packing is a critical part of traveling, and it's crucial to pack light, especially when traveling alone. It can make navigating the airport much more stressful if you have lots of heavy luggage with you especially when it's your first time flying alone. Before packing make sure to check the airline's carry-on and checked luggage restrictions before doing any packing.

To streamline your travels I recommend packing all the essentials in your carry-on bag, Ensure your passport, travel documents, necessary medications, and a spare set of clothes are securely stowed within your carry-on. Don't forget to pack a portable charger for your phone and other electronic devices to keep them powered throughout your journey.

Check-In Online

Opting for online check-in offers a hassle-free way to streamline your airport experience. Allowing you to save time, and also leaves you with less to do at the airport which can help ease your mind. Almost all airlines now have the convenience of checking in online, allowing you to choose your seat, get your boarding pass, and even pay for any baggage fees in advance. To avoid lines at the airport, I strongly advise checking in online at least 24 hours before departure. Nonetheless familiarize yourself with your airline's policies regarding online check-in, to avoid extra fees for late check in, as some airlines only have online check-in.

Choosing Your Seat

Choosing the right seat can have a significant impact on your flying experience. I suggest choosing a window seat if you want to enjoy the view or an aisle seat if you need to stretch your legs or have easy access to the restroom. Avoid choosing seats near the galley or lavatory as they can be noisy and disruptive. Most airlines charge extra to choose a seat, so if you are on a budget consider this. However, for those flying alone for the first time, it may be worth it to ensure a more comfortable flight with your preferences.

In conclusion, organizing essentials, checking in online, and picking your seat are important pre-flight preparations that can make your first time flying alone hassle-free. By following these tips, you can guarantee a seamless and enjoyable journey.

Navigating the Airport

When it’s your first time flying alone, navigating the airport can feel overwhelming. However, with some preparation and understanding the process, you can effortlessly navigate the airport. Here are some tips on how to navigate the airport:

Arriving Early

I always make sure to arrive at the airport at least two hours before my flight. This gives me enough time to check-in, go through security, and find my gate without feeling rushed. My first time flying alone I arrived four hours before (this amount of time is not necessary!). However, the whole process was so quick and easy, that I found my-self with plenty of time to shop and enjoy some food and drinks while I waited for my flight.

Depending if your flight is domestic or international will determine how early you should arrive. It’s usually recommended three hours for an international flight and two hours for a domestic. It's better to have extra time than to miss your flight because you arrived late. As you get more comfortable with flying solo, you will be able to judge the perfect time you need to arrive at the airport for.

Security Checkpoints

Airport security may seem daunting, but it's important to bear in mind that they are just doing their job to ensure everyone’s safety. And if you get searched or patted down remember that it’s just a random routine check and not to panic or feel embarrassed. Here are some tips to make the process smoother:

  • Make sure your liquids are in a clear, plastic bag and are under 3.4 ounces. (check airline rules to confirm this)

  • Take off your shoes, belt, and any metal jewelry before going through the metal detector. (also make sure to take your phone out of your pocket and put it in a bin!)

  • Remove your laptop and any other large electronics from your bag and place them in a separate bin.

  • If you have any medical equipment or special needs, let the security officer know before going through the checkpoint.

Finding Your Gate

Once you're through security, it's time to find your gate. Here are some tips to help you navigate the airport and find your gate:

  • Look for signs that direct you to your gate. Most airports have maps and signs that show the location of each gate.

  • If you're not sure where to go, don't be afraid to ask for help. Airport staff and airline employees are usually happy to assist you.

  • If you have a layover, make sure to check the departure boards to see if your gate has changed or if there are any delays.

Remember, navigating the airport can be stressful, but with a little preparation and understanding of the process, your first time flying alone can be a breeze.

Boarding and In-Flight Tips

Understanding Boarding Process

When boarding the plane, it's important to understand the process to avoid confusion and stress. I always make sure to arrive at the gate early, there is usually seating available so you can relax and wait until your gate opens. I also check my boarding pass to know my boarding group and time. If I have a carry-on bag, I confirm that it meets the airline's size and weight requirements to avoid any complications.

Finding Your Seat

If you have not paid for a specific seat before you will get an assigned seat on your boarding pass, the seats are marked above and easy to find. For your first time flying alone, I’d recommend paying the extra fee to choose your preferred seating when booking your flight. Either store your luggage in the overhead bins or under the seat in front of you, if you need any help lifting your luggage the flight attendants are always ready to assist you.

Choosing the right seat can make a huge difference in your flying experience. For me, I prefer the window seat because I love the view and I find it more comfortable not having to move for others when they get up to use the toilet. However, if you need to move around often or have anxiety about being trapped, the aisle seat might be a preferable choice. And if you want extra legroom, consider sitting in the emergency exit row.

Managing In-Flight Anxiety

If you experience anxiety during the flight, there are a few actions you take to manage it. I always carry a book, listen to music or download a movie to distract myself. Deep breathing exercises can also help calm your nerves. And remember, flying is a safe way to travel. In the unlikely event of an emergency, the flight crew is trained to handle it and there are safety measures in place like oxygen masks and emergency exits. Additionally, there should also be a safety sheet that shows you how to use these, that you can take a look at any time.

plane safety instructions

It's also important to be prepared for any unexpected situations. Make sure you have all necessary items in your carry-on bag, such as a power bank and charging cable, to keep your phone charged and your boarding pass accessible. And if you get motion sickness, consider bringing medication or ginger candies to alleviate symptoms.

Overall, by understanding the boarding process, choosing the right seat, and managing in-flight anxiety, you can have a stress-free and enjoyable experience flying alone for the first time.

Arrival and Post-Flight Tips

After landing follow the flight attendant's instructions and until instructed to stand up and start departing the plane. Make sure you don’t forget any of your belongings!

Picking Up Your Luggage

Upon arriving at your destination, the first thing you'll need to do is collect your luggage (if you have checked in luggage, otherwise you can skip this step). There are usually signs to direct you to where to go. Make sure to check the luggage regulations for your airline before you fly. This will help you avoid any surprises or delays at the baggage claim. Once you've picked up your luggage, double-check to make sure you have everything you need before leaving the baggage claim area.

Navigating Public Transportation

If you are traveling on a budget or seeking an authentic travel experience, public transportation is a great choice. Many airports will also have shuttle busses that take you to the nearest city. Research the public transportation available at your destination before your arrival. This will help you navigate more easily and avoid any confusion. If you're unsure about anything, don't hesitate to ask for help. Locals are usually more than happy to assist tourists.

Checking into Accommodation

Following a long flight, checking into your accommodation is likely one of the first things on your mind. Ensure you have your ID or passport ready when you arrive at your accommodation. This will help speed up the check-in process. Once you're settled in, take some time to relax and enjoy the view from your room. You've earned it!

Remember, your first time flying alone can evoke a mix of nerves and excitement. But with a little preparation and a positive attitude, it can also be an incredibly rewarding experience. So take a deep breath, and enjoy the journey! And now that the most difficult part is over you can make the most out of your trip and enjoy the newfound freedom it brings.

Additional Tips for Solo Travel

Using a VPN

When traveling alone, it's important to take additional precautions to protect your personal information. One way to do this is by using a Virtual Private Network (VPN). A VPN secures your internet connection, increasing the difficulty for hackers to retrieve your data especially if you are using public wi-fi. I personally use NordVPN, which has servers all over the world and provides fast and reliable connections.

Packing Entertainment Options

Long flights can be boring, particularly when traveling alone. That's why I always make sure to pack loads of entertainment options. This may include a good book, a tablet loaded with movies and TV shows, downloaded music and podcasts, or a portable gaming device. I also suggest bringing noise-cancelling headphones, which can help to block out distractions and help you get some rest on the flight. Read more here for my recommended travel accessories for long flights.

Dealing with Stopovers

If you have a long layover or stopover during your solo flight, it can be tempting just to sit around and wait for your next flight. However, I've discovered that it's much more enjoyable to use this time to explore the airport or city where you're stopping over.

I make sure to never adventure too far from the airport but it can be a great opportunity to experience some local food and culture. Some airports even provide complimentary tours or activities for passengers with extended layovers. Just be sure to keep an eye on the time and make sure you don't miss your connecting flight.
